Just kidding.

Jeff is a long time friend and a missionary in Fort Portal, Uganda. It is Jeff who has helped organizes the many trip for americans to serve at Faith Quest teen camp in Uganda. He has been serving in Uganda for over 10 years and the stories he tells make my life look like a bad novel.

Sissy slap Monkey fights, gourmet "pressed head", AK-47's, rebellions, babies, witches, curses, fires, plane crashes, stranded, dredging dead bodies from mucky waters, snakes, COBRA'S, poisonous centipedes, children's hospitals, betrayal, threats, broken bones, riots, theft, machet, viruses, soldiers, orphans, hunger, refugee camps, LRA, ADF, muzungoo, teaching, prayer, faith, love. Believe me the list goes on and on. Many will die having never lived... not Jeff.

Jeff embraces life. ALL OF IT. When Jesus said, he came that we might have life and have it abundantly, Jeff believed it.

Jeff is also a man who trusts God. For good and in the bad. Jeff doesn't believe in God only because good things happen, no he has seen God's mighty hand in the lives of the world. Where there are people who are helpless and harassed, Jeff is there because God is there.

I would also add, that Jeff is the man he is because God gave him a wonderful wife, Cheryl. If he is a great man, it's because he had an incredible wife.

Jeff lives how most men want, adventurous. Diving into Gods work is to be what we were created for. That doesn't have to be in Africa or India, it could be where you are standing and making decisions that will allow you to live your life to the fullest.

Jeff has taken the "step" of faith and has found a place, that for him, where he can only survive if he trust God.

Now what might that look like for you? What does it look like to me? I have thought that my life was boring, it's not. Jeff helps me see that each of us has a story that is God breathed, we just have to take notice of it.

I'm thankful for all the wisdom he has given and how he continues to be faithful to where God has called him.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I can understand a gift that someone gives you and you open it, but never use it... I'm talking about a packaged wrapped, with a surprise inside? No one knows until you open it.

I debated of having this image or having no image. Of course this picture isn't of a person nor would a blank image be acceptable. But, it's my project and my life lesson and I had a gift, an opportunity... missed.

Several years back, my friend Steve Novak was working with our church by going out into the community, finding needs and asking people, "how are things with you and the Lord?"

Bold thing to do, but that's Steve.

Upon arriving at a home where a younger man was working under the hood of his vehicle, Steve, for the first time would meet Francisco. As the conversation led from one thing to the next, Steve asked Francisco, "If the Lord was to return right now, do you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that you would go be with Him in heaven?" Upon hearing this, Francisco said, "If that happened now, I would be doomed."

Francisco, came to our church and had dinner with a bunch of us. He looked a bit rough in his sleeveless shirt and his large muscles and a tattoo band around his biceps, but he was there. As we shared later that evening, Francisco has questions... He looked at the Bible, asked challenging questions and after several days, committed his life to Christ in the waters of Baptism. I remember, I was there.

Francisco, would stop by the building to find peace and quite and a place to pray. He had a girlfriend and they had a child that he loved with all his heart. Though he knew he should get married, his girlfriend wasn't to keen on the idea. She thought things were just fine as there were... she had not embraced the faith that he had days before.

No matter what, he was set to change his life and raise up his kid in the Lord. He would come in his sleeveless shirts but his little kids dressed in the best clothes available.

Opportunities came soon that would give him the change to be manager for a local food chain. But, like King David and King Solomon, He had a weakness. Women.

He came to me and shared what he had done. I gave him straight forward advice, told him to repent and follow his commitments. It was February of 2007. Sharing a bit more, I told him I loved him and that he had a wonderful story and there I asked him if I might take his picture for a project I was working on. He was thrilled. We kept missing shoot times and then things took a turn for the worse.

He had been falsely accused of something that could bring jail time. The evidence was weak at best, but what came out was that he was not a legal resident. His parents had moved here from Mexico when he was a boy and he never gained citizenship. When the law began making threats to send him to jail for several years and then deport him back to Mexico. Scared, and who wouldn't be, one day he just fled. If he was to be deported anyhow, no need to spend time in jail first.

I never got to take his picture.

Last I heard he was making $2 US a day. I don't know if I will ever see him this side of heaven. I don't know. He was a wonderful story of God living in him... even in all this mess.

He told me once... "All I want is to be an 'Ultimate Fighting Champion.'" In Christ, he is an Ultimate Fighting Champ.

Wherever you are Francisco, you have family here always. I will always be your brother. I wish I could take this all away. However, remember that when you are weak, He can make you strong.

Do me a favor, take that picture and listen to someone's story.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. A gift of Gods given to more worthy people... like Marlon Brown.

Marlon married into a family that I have known since my early years here in Wenatchee. I love that, from the very beginning, we could talk straight forward to each other in way most would not. Age, background, spiritual, political, race... none of them off the chart.

But the place he truly shines is in song.

When Marlon lead our church community into worship it seems to impact many who are in attendance. The sign of a good leader. He's not to overpowering, and not to soft. He has a way of leading that makes you think you're a better singer than you really are. Because, it's not performance, it's "Joyful noise."

Next year he will be a father. Right now his youthfulness is talking a lot of smack... that's ok, I did it too.

I know he will be a good and loving father, because he is a good and loving husband.

As with many others in my "52" list, he's not perfect, just forgiven. A man who trust in the Lord, is a strong man.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I know that sometimes things can get bad, but who cares... I have a job that allows me to study the Word of God, share and interact with kids... all kids both young and old. Jesus said, "unless you become like little children, you cannot enter the Kingdom of God."

Darryl is in a similar situation as I am. He's a camp director for a local Christian camp that we use for retreats here in central Washington. When I first met him I thought, "man, he's just a kid." I learned, who better to lead a camp for teens.

Anything we have ever needed at our time at Camas meadow, Darryl has provided... even good coffee, not that nasty old camp coffee.

In the Kingdom of God, it's nice to know I am not alone. There are other good men and women who are doing the service of the King and at anytime, we can gather forces together and love God and love our neighbor.

Even though Darryl and I only get to see each other once or twice a year, the time between never seems to interrupt right where we left off. One of the MANY beautiful things that the Love of Jesus brings to his people.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I'll never forget our first golf game. I love golf, but I'm not that good. I think I'm good, but my great friend Steve always reminds me that I am not. It doesn't matter though. The fact is: it's better to play bad golf than to do yard work.

I digress...

Steve and I have been through a lot together. Most of it is personal and not really the story I feel needs to be shared here.

What does need to be shared is the example of the power and faithfulness of God working in peoples lives. Like Steve.

From the impossible odds of adopting a wonderful little girl and then being able to adopt her brother, is a story of Steve letting go and letting God. Against all odds in later years of almost losing them, Steve's faithfulness to "STAND" in the midst of muck and mud, at the end trusting God, kept all his children close and also gave him an opportunity to be a real father to even more children without a father.

His heart is pure, wise and seeks God in the most unlikely of places.

His sarcasm is a gift, which sometimes does more damage than good... Especially when we are together. (We ask for your prayers not your criticism) But his humor can lift you out of many difficult times. He has the ability to help you focus on what really matters and an authentic gift for teaching.

We have been through a lot together... I'm sure we will go through a lot more.

One thing for sure, I'm proud of his stubborn clinging to the Cross of Christ.

Steve, has a wonderful story about finding God. As Steve would say, "I never was a bad person. I always treated others well. I never killed anyone. I wasn't an alcoholic... etc, etc. I never saw the need for God. I was a good person." Why would I believe in God?"

Then he watched the movie "Contact" in which there is a conversation between two of the main characters, Palmer Joss, a Pastor/friend and Ellie, a scientist who has a hard time believing that anyone could "prove" the existence of God.

In the scene, Ellie challenges Palmer to prove the existence of God.

Palmer Joss: Did you love your father?
Ellie Arroway: What?
Palmer Joss: Your dad. Did you love him?
Ellie Arroway: Yes, very much.
Palmer Joss: Prove it.

Amazingly those few lines challenged Steve in his faith of God. How do you "prove" love? There is where it began.

His faith journey is not ended... yet.

I am honored to have been able to stand by him and be called his friend. I'm still no good at golf, but Steve takes me right where I am... and taught me.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. That's my friendship with Vance. A strong and faithful man, whose legacy will live forever in the lives of his children and his children's children and their children... Need I go on about the children. He is living proof that faithfulness produces a wonderful and abundant crop.

I remember when Dawnette and I first got married, we made a trip from Portland to Wenatchee. We decided at the last minute to change our plans and visit MY friends in Wenatchee. (I lived in Wenatchee for a year and a half before moving back to Portland where I met and married Dawnette) After evening worship time, Vance invited us to have pizza at a local pizza place. I remember him asking where we were staying and I had said, "no where yet... we're just going to get a hotel room" Something that people say a lot to newlyweds. Anyway, Vance insisted we stay in a trailer home he had. Remembering that he had once owned a trailer park, I thought, "great! cheap!, free place to stay!" We followed him to his house and as he stepped out of his car, he pointed out our sleeping accomodations and that the toilet was outside in the garage. I won't share what I thought at that moment... I will only say, now, 15 years later, I can laugh at it.

The next day we were off to finish our "honeymoon" as we had originally planned. Long, long, long story short... our car broke down, the hotel lost our reservations, we had no more money because we had to have our car fixed which took TWO DAYS! Yet to our rescue, Vance came to pick us up. I was hoping we wouldn't have to stay in the camper again... We didn't. He had found a home for us to stay in while our car was being repaired. He is a servent.

His life reflects the Joy of the Lord. He embraces children, provides for those who cannot, yet, he is humble and serves without reserve.

Next year, he will be 90 years old. What a life story.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I'm not sure how I can honestly keep this post short. Jason is my closest friend. Which is kind of funny since we live about five hours away from each other.

Jason grew up with brothers, (I with sisters). He reads, (I look at pictures). He sings, (I make a joyful NOISE). He uses a PC, (I use a Mac). He's a rock star, (I am not). He has a chocolate lab, (I have a chocolate lab). ah finally something in common.

We do share many things. He's a jerk, sometimes... as am I. He loves his family, as do I. He's passionate about African missions, me too. He has no credit card debt... I'll never have another credit card. Dare I continue the list? He seeks God...

On our trip to Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, we had some great talks about God and being a servant as we dug sewer holes. I found humility in a bottle of ice cold water with Jason and KP.

Beyond the trenches Jason is the best worship leader I know... at least he tries to be. I've enjoyed his leadership at the Metro church of Christ and at Faith Quest, US. He puts God first into his worship planning and then all of himself.

He is the reason I will run someday. And that's Jason. He says we can do things we sometimes don't think we can do. Or rather, he gets me to do things I wouldn't even think of. Glass half empty vs. glass half full. I'm a blues man, so you can imagine with ease what my glass is most of the time.

He wouldn't say it himself, so I will. He is also an accomplished photographer. It was his rebel xt that sent me down the road of Canon DSLR's.

Via email, IM chats and cell phone calls on the drive home, our conversation is most everyday. Perhaps it's good to be five hours away... most, in their right mind, would never place dynamite next to a spark... something could explode. So when we have the time together, we have to potential of being little dangerous but our intentions are good... We continue to build on a great foundation which makes us more brothers than friends.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. Mark Love has been a friend for sometime. I first knew his parents when I was young. His father preached at the church I attended in California. Having a father like Mark has, one with a well known name for ministry, I've wondered... How do you get past being just, that "preacher's... KID?"

Well, Mark has done it... Not in making a name for self, but a name for God. His love of God and his love for the northwest has given drive to a passion that restores a community that has been called to shine Light to the world. Truly a difficult challenge here in the northwest were it's hard to get even the sun to shine. Being encouraged to remember Gods kingdom, Gods reign and Gods preferred future for the world is a strong statement of his. He has a fight on his hands... a good fight that is well worth it. There are lives at risk. God wants His people back... Mark has heard the call.

On top of it all, he loves U2 and plays the guitar.

I'm glad to know him and I'm glad to learn from him.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. Short scuffing sounds of a forward motioning walkers. If you're not careful, you could be trampled and very slowly killed by anyone of our senior saints in their attempt to find their Sunday morning pew. "Death by walker" not good.

However, Blanche, with her limited sight, finds time to "see" people around her. She has such a calming voice when she speaks, you know you are in the presence of a true saint. She would never say that about herself... that's why I'm here.

Blanche is a beautiful daughter of God. I struggle for words to share, because... how do you write BEAUTY?

A few weeks ago, during worship service, I turned to look around at those gathered and saw Blanche. It was like a light opened from heaven and I saw this little woman with her eyes closed, her hands together yet lifted up... both giving and receiving praise. As she sang, I wanted so badly to move next to her, to "see" what she was seeing. Although a brief moment, it was one of the best worships I've ever been a part of.

I am a fool for not spending more weekdays with her.

To hear her share of her childhood, is a pleasant trip to a time more simple and less distracting than today. They are stories of places I would like to find for my children and their children.

Yet, in all her wisdom and grace, I also love her spice. She will tell you only truth. Like it or not. Bold and honest.

As the weeks go by I see her body grow more frail... However, as the weeks go by, I see her Spirit grow stronger. The words of the prophet Isaiah are fulfilled in her...

Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;

but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

Amen~
johno

Johnathan M. "If you think you can or can't, you're right." Education. It's more than books, papers and essays. It's learning, growing and life.

Mike Hill is a good friend who shares a passion with me... education. Mike is the newly appointed principal for Cascade High School and he's the best man for the job. I only wish I had someone like Mike in my years of schooling. He takes the time to listen. He wants to know what you think. He's great with complements and fast with a encouraging critique.

Mike also serves as an elder (shepherd) at the church I work with. In short, he's one of four men who serve as... my boss. He offers so much to the Kingdom here in central Washington. He brings to our community ears that listen in a time when so many wish to be heard. I admire that. How many men in the world actually serve like this? He gives wisdom and knowledge and grace, in Christ, to many hurting people.

Encouragement.

He's raised three sons who bring honor to his name. He loves football... (maybe a little to much) and his dream is to work with the congregation of believers near his college alum, Washington State University. I know he will... someday.

But for today, he leads as good leaders do... Not in screams nor crazy hand gestures... rather, he walks beside you, holding your hand, if need be, and with an encouraging voice he pushes you out of the nest... so you can fly.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. Grace. It took grace from the Creator to do something of which he knew would cause Him pain. Yet, He did it anyway. God created man... In His own image.

My Adam is a reminder to me of God's grace. A friend of ours gave us a drawing of Jesus and a lamb. It hangs on the wall near Adams bed. When he wakes from a nap or is startled and starts to cry, I go into his room and pick him up and hold him close. As I hold my son, I turn to see the drawing on the wall and I'm reminded of a Fathers love for His children. Jesus says, "If you've seen me, then you've seen the Father." As Adam lays his head on my shoulder and I embrace him, I see the image of Jesus embracing the little lamb. It's there I catch a glimpse of grace. God want's to embrace me like I embrace my son.

Adam is growing well, although he is still under 20 pounds at 20 Months. He love to call out to his "brodher," (Caleb) "sissy," (Miriam) and "Nannah." (Hannah) Oh, and Tanner our dog, which sounds a lot like "Nannah" We can only tell the difference because of the "woof" that comes at the end.

He's good at throwing baby tantrums... Although they come mostly when he's ready for nap time. He has learned the words, "PLEASE!" when he wants something and "MINE!" when he wants something. At the dinner table he bows his head and says "AMEN!"

He's not a perfect child, but he's mine. I'm so blessed to have Adam. If he was lost, I would give anything and everything to have him back. An interesting thought (for me) from someone created in the image of God... Because of Adam the Love of a Father looks very different to me today and forever.

Isaiah 43 (The Message)

But now, God's Message, the God who made you in the first place, Jacob,
the One who got you started, Israel:
"Don't be afraid, I've redeemed you.
I've called your name. You're mine.
When you're in over your head, I'll be there with you.
When you're in rough waters, you will not go down.
When you're between a rock and a hard place,
it won't be a dead end—
Because I am God, your personal God,
The Holy of Israel, your Savior.
I paid a huge price for you:
all of Egypt, with rich Cush and Seba thrown in!
That's how much you mean to me!
That's how much I love you!
I'd sell off the whole world to get you back,
trade the creation just for you.
"So don't be afraid: I'm with you.
I'll round up all your scattered children,
pull them in from east and west.
I'll send orders north and south:
'Send them back.
Return my sons from distant lands,
my daughters from faraway places.
I want them back, every last one who bears my name,
every man, woman, and child
Whom I created for my glory,
yes, personally formed and made each one.'"

I love him

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. It was at my Thursday morning prayer time with several youth dudes in the valley. Gabe showed up to the first meeting of the year, of which we had around 20 or more youth pastors and volunteers. However, next week came and only a small handful returned. Gabe was one those who returned. Brand new into youth ministry then, he now has a season under his belt and he's still going. It's hard for me to think he's not been doing ministry longer. He has great ideas and wonderful insight, yet, he still wonders and has questions for the small band of brothers... and one sister who meet early Thursday morning.

He and his wife are currently seeking to adopt. I can't wait until they get kids... It'll be a whole new Gabe.

I do admire his commitment. Musical Genius. That's the only way I know how to say it.

Ike has been a long time friend of mine from college. I'm trying to recount the stories to share, however, I think if I were to actually type them out, they could be used against us both in a court of law.

For the last several, several years Ike has been working at the pump church in Portland, Oregon. I suggest you take a look at it if you're not familiar with urban ministries. His time working there has been a fruitful for the northwest. PUMP has offered a lot to the church in the suburbs.

Ike is a... Prophet. (not really, but really) I love our talks. He tells you what God is saying and he really doesn't care if you don't like what he just said. He just tells it like it is. He is one to never just let you "get by" with junk. He teaches by example and he learns by example. I'm lucky to have him on my back and by my side.

This image of Ike is a small glimpse of a great man. His sandals, with socks, are his common foot ware. He is passionate about vanagons... check out his blog page .:trinisonic:.if you haven't already.

If you were going to plot to take over the world, you would want Ike on your team.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I didn't get to do that either. However, I did get to talk to Todd Agnew while he was he in Wenatchee. I'm not sure I made best friends when I told him that I didn't care for his song "grace like rain" when it first came out. He just shrugged and listened as I then told him that God puts certain people in certain places at certain times so they might reach out for Him and grab hold of Him, because He is not far from each of us. I told Todd that it took some time for me to digest his song. It's now one of my most treasured songs.

Todd Agnew is not a "rock star" he's a guy who sings and helps the church. Many critics say Todd is the next Rich Mullins. He's song style is kind of like Rich's. He walks around barefoot as Rich also did... (Rich Mullins was killed in a tragic car accident in 1997)

Yet, Todd is not like Rich because he walks barefoot a lot and writes his own music... He's like Rich because Rich was a child of God. Todd does what Rich did so well... He keeps his music in the ministry of Jesus Christ. He is an extension of the church and I'm glad he is on my side.

I'm not sure if I will ever meet Todd this side of heaven again, but if I do, it will be nice to spend time with my brother who writes some pretty good music.

peace.
johno

Johnathan M. What can I say about Jeremy. He's Honest. That's what I love about Jeremy. No Bull. Straight forward and honest. He coached my son last year along with his son. He is the father of two boys and he really loves them. He's a husband who loves his wife and cares for the wellness of his whole family. I've not seen many people works so hard to provide for their family like Jeremy. It's good to know it still survives in this world. We use to get together and visit. Since our sons are on different teams this year, our visits have been few and to far in between.

I love when we get to sit down and talk about God. I'm not sure if Jeremy knows this or not, but he really helps give new perspectives to some of us who have been looking at old stories like old stories. I would love to start at the beginning of the Bible and read the whole thing with Jeremy. It would not fail to be an adventure... I'm sure of it.

One other thing I enjoy about Jeremy is this... He is loyal. He is a good friend. If you need him, he WILL be there.

I know our paths are not as crossed as they once were, but he has made a difference in my life.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. It's not that I don't think they are true... they are. It's just that, well, most of what I could say, I don't think he would want just anyone to know. He's a giver. I haven't known anyone who has met Brad and had any need unmet. I mean real needs. There is a story about the first century church that says everyone had everything in common, they shared their possessions and no one had any need among them. If you know Brad, you know he shares his possessions and if your with him, well, you will never starve to death. I sometimes wonder how much can one man give? If I were to share how much he has blessed my family, he might be embarrassed. Well, he doesn't get embarrassed much, but I will say, he has blessed my home.

I don't know all the places he has given but I know he has and does. If you need to mow your lawn but your lawn mower is broken and you can't afford to fix it... ask Brad. Car broke? He'll let you borrow his truck. (thanks for that Brad) Need help making a budget? He knows how to do that too.

He loves to hug the kids, although they sometimes run. He teaches teens and other young adults ways to seek and love God. He serves as a shepherd for our church.

I will say this, he's from Texas. I know, I know. Don't let that stop you from getting to know him. He has a lot to offer. However, you have to get with him before 8:00 PM because he likes to go to bed early and get up early. Drives his wife nuts. i think that's why he does it.

He's straight forward in his conversation and very rarely does he beat-around-the-bush. Take him as he is... there is no other way.

I am thankful for his example.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I am surrounded by so many brothers, (from another mother) and sisters, (from another mister) I feel as if there is no place for me to go where I am without family. Although Steve Maxwell and I don't share the same last name, he is and always will be Uncle Steve to my children. He's my brother... I'm better looking but his voice is out of this world.

When it comes to music Steve can really lay down some sweet vocals that makes you want to stand up and shout AMEN! An obvious gift from God, which Steve has not hidden. His voice is a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. After singing with the several vocal groups, such as freedom and Acappella he stepped up to a higher calling by serving at PUMP church in Portland, Oregon as their children's minister. He is a man of faith, a man of God.

Five years ago Steve and I had the pleasure to go to Uganda, Africa. Once more we will make that trip together, Lord willing, in December. I know it will be filled with many new adventures and I cannot wait to sing and dance to his vocal percussion.

It was amazing how Steve taught the kids in Uganda to sing. My ears have yet to hear such sweet sounds like those in Africa. This year, I'm bringing a recording device. Steve has even encouraged me to write songs. I'm up to four, with more in the works. If I can do it, anyone can... as long as Steve is there to help.

So many songs to be written, so many to sing.

Keep singing my brother Steve... keep singing.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. The Estes family. We attended the same church and a small community group, which I had the opportunity to lead on occasion. It was during those small groups I discovered, "When I have children... I want to be a father like Steve."

An amazing story of a father, caring for his kids. As Steve told the story on Sunday afternoon, (actually it might of been his wife, Steve doesn't boast much about himself), he was hiking with his three children when one of them fell and was injured. The tears came like a flood, and the screams began to echo from the other two children. Both children uninjured, but overwhelmed with terror at the sight of a sibling no longer laughing and having fun on their hiking expedition.

Many fathers, might have found themselves frustrated with the other two kids crying for no reason as they carry their one hurt child back to safety. However, Steve didn't carry just the injured child... He carried ALL THREE out of "danger" and to the safety of their home. I think it was 5 miles... (maybe not but at least that's what makes a good hero story) anyhow, even if it wasn't, I know he could... look at the picture, he's built.

Yet, the greatest thing about Steve is not his physical strength, it's his Godly strength and gentle nature. He's the type of man who could welcome the smallest child and hold back the fiercest enemy. He is a wonderful husband, a wonderful father.

It's good to have him on my team.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I know the kids are there to have fun... Sometimes the parents forget that. It's not that I wouldn't want to be a coach... It's dealing with parents. That takes something special and I know I don't have it. But Dave does.

I first met Dave last year during soccer. He was Miriam's soccer coach and all I can say is, I'm very glad to have him as her coach for year two. Dave has a wonderful concern for the kids to have fun, but also to learn how to compete and compete with good sportsmanship. This year will prove a bit more difficult, I think, for Dave as the girls start, "bumping" a bit more. I could tell Dave was having a difficult time trying to explain... "More bumping." He's a big guy. He has what I call, man arms. My arms are small, my wrists are like a twelve year old girl. (I never understood why my forearms never developed... I keep thinking they will, but hey, I'm 37 years old, I might want to get real) I digress.

Anyhow, he's a big guy. This last week he asked me to help demonstrate the "bump." I thought, "no problem, I can take on these little girls." He wanted to demonstrate the "bump" with ME! Anyone familiar with soccer knows the bumping. No fist, no elbows, but you can force your body in position for the ball and BUMP the other player. I lost. I didn't stand a chance. I should have known I was in trouble when he told me to help and then said, "You might want to put your camera down." He must have known I had come to take his picture.

Well... so it goes and it's one more good reason why I don't coach soccer.

But Dave does. Out of all the things he could be doing, he coaches little girls. He plugs into his community and gives something that will shape the future of these little ladies. People like that amaze me. Someone who gives and doesn't expect anything in return.

As I got to know Dave, I discovered his view on family and I learned about his strong faith in Christ.

I also learned he had been injured in a work related accident in which his left eye had been pierced. He's blind in one eye.

I can't imagine this. I would never want too. But Dave has taught me a new "view" on life. Take a look at this picture of my friend Donna. Well? A pictures worth a thousand words and if you can't see them here, don't you wish you could?

When I first met Donna, it was during church. She sits towards the back, (a place notorious for trouble makers) and as church began we had just started our conversation. Being in the back too and trying to make friends with this spicy little old lady, I said, "I have good ears for piercing... Do you think i should get my ears pierced or get a tattoo?" (side note... my wife would allow neither) I like to push buttons sometimes and my attempt with such a harsh suggestion in my attempt to raise an eyebrow backfired. Donna responded, "Well, I got a tattoo. I love bluebirds and I wanted a little bluebird on my on my forearm so I could look at one everyday... See?"

There it was, a little bluebird painted on the inside of her forearm. All I could think is, "I want to party with you." Her smile never faded and I realized i was in the presence of a very joyful woman.

Her life, however, has had many difficult times. Catching up for lost time? I'm not sure, but her past roads have been tough. You would never know looking at her today.

You would also never know by looking at her today that her body is fighting a losing battle with cancer. She still glows with a beauty that refuses to give in to the terrible destruction within her. She lives in Christ. Death has no sting and death has no victory. What a wonderful thing.

For today, I am thankful for the conversation we share and I look forward to an eternity of sharing.

When I grow up, I want to have a piece of Donna's spirit... I think I already do.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. Children are a gift from God and I'm amazed He trusts us enough to take on this responsibility. Just over a year ago, I was asked to perform the marriage of Adrienne's parents, Dustin and Samantha. Dustin was a student in my youth group and he and I often share in photo trips around Wenatchee.

Not to say anything about me... BUT, I picked the day and almost the exact time Adrienne would be born. Among the neigh-sayers, I held my ground and did a little dance when I found out she was coming.

I'm not a grandpa, that will come much later, but I am related. I'm not sure Adrienne is ready for this or not, but it's here.

What will you bring to this world? I can only imagine that it will be something that makes a difference for someone. Dream today... Rest. The Lord has mighty things prepared for you. He has place you in this spot at this time so you may someday reach out and grab the Masters hand.

For me, it is a reminder to be like a child, trusting in the Father so that I might sleep and dream about the future and holding the Masters hand

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. Backs of heads, more than one person in the shot. Does this qualify as a POTW shot. Then I thought... my project, my rules, my final decision. ERIC.

Eric is a native American who lives and works in Tuba City. He is a boarding school teacher for the Navajo children in his town. Eric is one of those guys who has the gift of story telling. It would be great to pen all the words of the time he tried running away from his grand mother who, while riding a horse bareback, "roped" him as a form of discipline, but I'm afraid I would leave out the best details. It was a great story.

Eric has a love for his culture, his people and his Lord. He spent many hours giving and never asking for anything in return. He just served. He watched and listened to us. He wanted to know us and our stories. I wondered where he got the energy to keep up. Early in the morning till late at night he was there.

He plans to marry in a few short days.

A young man who has overcome the oppression of the past with the love and forgiveness of the ages.

He is a mighty warrior

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

This has always been a challenging scripture for me. Send me. What if I don't like it? Why not send someone else? Why send me anyway? I'm not sure if this is why I never ended up a missionary to a foreign land... I ask to many questions. Yet, Paul Ghee has been a missionary in Tuba City, AZ for 30 years. In the desert. With hot summers. With sand storms. With thunder and lightening storms. Snakes. Spiders... BIG SPIDERS. Scorpions and red dirt that finds it's way into EVERYTHING.

OK, I might not be at the top of the list for this type of work, but then again...

Paul and his wife Ann have been serving the Navajo nation for 30 years as missionaries in Tuba City. His work is not the largest and it's not the best, but it's honest and full of Jesus. He meets these people where they are at. He's not a Crusader who rushes in to convert souls and force them to act this way or die. (anyone affected by the crusades... my apologies for the destructive thing done in the name which brought peace) Paul teaches Christ in the native tradition. The Great Creator has a name.

I must say this is hard for me to understand, because it is a cultural thing. I'm not native american, but Paul doesn't expect me to be. He takes me where I am. He gives insight to this northwest boy about how important our work is and that it's building trust from a people who were mistreated by the white man not so long ago. Peace, love and forgiveness forefront in his life. A testament to his faithfulness.

I can't think of any better way to do missions. It's Christ like. Go to where the people are... listen to them. Tell them the Kingdom of God is near and serve them.

I want to serve.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. Jeff is one of those faithful. I love the way Jeff does youth work. Jeff is a go getter. He's not afraid to meet kids where they are at. He calls them, challenges them, loves them. He is a man of God with a passion to share the Message with teens. Again, this might sound easy but it's not. I can think of 10 others who have given up youth ministry in 9 years. To last longer than two years seems to be a major achievement.

But Jeff does this to serve the One he loves. Jesus. Jeff is great at sharing the story of Jesus with teens. He walks with them on their journey and teaches them about the Way. When a student decides to yield their life to Christ in baptism, Jeff dons his nike, "just do it!" shirt and steps into the water.

He has a smile that can welcome the smallest child and a stance that can make grown men think twice before messing with him.

And of course, the photo... Jeff is not above getting down and dirty... err, wet with the best. A slip-n-slide that could kill the average adult male, and yet, this servant meets kids where they are at. Many would never attempt such a thing. Most wouldn't care. But then again, that's what makes Jeff a great youth minister.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I may not see it immediately, but I know it is there.

Josiah

Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years.

Happy birthday Josiah. You're not yet eight so you have a few years to go before the real work begins.

Josiah is a young man who's family recently moved near Wenatchee. The journey of his life is no mistake. He has a purpose and a place. He has a legacy of Great men before him. His father and grand father, uncles and cousins carry a name of honor in the Northwest. And here he is with me and my family. Jackpot. could I ask for anything better for my son than to have a friend like this soon to be boy king? Sometimes in life we need a boy king to help remind us of things pure, things hoped for and childlike faith.

Well, he might not be king by eight but he will have much to offer. I just know. The name Bristow is a name that has blessed my family to many times to count.

So boy king, happy birthday.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. Many thought you would be a boy, not sure why. I knew. Your name was chosen just for you because you are a Thomas kid... a leader.

When Moses lead the children of Israel out of Egypt, Miriam lead the nation of Israel in worship and dancing.

Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing.

I love your dance. It is beautiful to me and to the Lord. I love you.

Miriam has a nickname... Mirmax. Maximum is here nature. All out. Nothing half way. All or none. I love this about her. She can physically challenge those twice her age and compete well.

She has a giving heart that makes her even more beautiful. Speak to harsh words to her and tears are quick to come. She cares for others... Gives to others... She has a heart that would make anyone proud.

I can't wait to see where she will go. She will go somewhere. However, with Mir, I think it would be good to point her at something so she hits it.

I wondered before she was born, "how can you love more than one child?" Miriam gave me the answer that changed my whole life.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I just don't know where He is at work due to the fact that I spend to much time in an office and not out looking for what God is already doing and jumping on board. Photography was "my idea" to use for Kingdom work. "Light" "Exposure"... get it. OK, maybe it's more of a God idea than mine because He placed me with a group of folks who love football... love to play... love to get hurt... Well, maybe not the hurt part, however, God placed me there. I'm sure of it.

I've been with the Rams shooting pics for 3 years now and I've enjoyed the relationships I've been given to share.

This year, for the very first time, I met Anthony. Anthony has a great story. He's never played football before in his life. He just thought he would walk on and try this sport out and somehow made it on the team.

To be honest, I thought he was a seasoned pro. (this might tell you how much or little I know about the game). Anthony brought an enthusiasm to the Rams family. I was not surprised when I found out he was a follower of the Way. He gave every game his all and kept a smile too. Every play, I watched him move with determination and effort that rivaled his younger counter parts.

At the seasons end awards celebration, He was given the honor of "Rookie of the Year" much deserved and humbly received.

I'm glad to know him. He's a good husband, a wonderful new dad and a brother to find encouragement in this shadow land.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. It seems like yesterday when I first met Dustin. It was at a camp hosted by the church I know work for. Somewhat of an interviewing process with both feet in the water... It was shortly after that I had both feet in the water with Dustin as he committed his life to Christ and was baptized.

Dustin is one of those "natural" artist. You know those who never had to really study for that final exam and still passed with an A+? Well, Dustin has a natural artistic style. His eye sees it like many never do. It's innovating and original. Both he and I can take pictures of the same thing and his, most of the time, looks better than mine. Jerk! Not really. Not only can Dustin capture photography he is an natural painter and sculpture. It's incredible to see fresh talent like his.

One year ago Dustin made a vow to his sweetheart, Samantha, and they celebrate their one year anniversary today, of which I was honored to perform the ceremony. To add to this celebration, Dustin and Samantha's first child is due the first of July.

It's been a great journey and I know we will have many more. I feel as if Dustin is a part of my family. I trust him. His heart is pure and I'm glad he serves God with me. It means a lot to have someone who can offer as much as Dustin can on your team. I only hope I can encourage him as much as he has encouraged me.

Happy Anniversary my friend.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. Several years back our church decided to walk throughout the community here in Wenatchee and knock on doors to meet the lives in our neighborhood. We were Christians just trying to get our christianity out of the building and into lives. As doors opened we asked our neighbors if they knew of anyone who might have come across difficult times and needed some food. If not we asked if they knew of anyone who was sick or in the hospital we could pray for and perhaps visit. Just getting "out" of the building and into our communities can be difficult, however, this time we did and we met Eddie.

Eddie is not native to Wenatchee... Passing through Wenatchee, his life changed. Emphysema. Notice the horizontal lines on his cheek? Marks of a freshly removed oxygen nasal tube... (he never lets me take his picture with it on) Unable to get around as much due to this life changing disability, Eddie made Wenatchee home. Home for several years before a group of "christians" got their "christianity" out of the building and into the neighborhoods. Several years, Eddie made his home in a town to which he thought no "church of Christ" (forgive me) denomination existed. So as Sundays came and went, Eddie stayed in a small, State assisted and minimal to say the least, Columbian apartments.

Knock, knock!

"hello... We're just christians trying to get our christianity out of the building..." I know it's exciting to find this one who was... well... Lost? I keep asking myself, "who was really lost and now found?"

Lesson learned, I hope.

Behind dark doorways and at the bottom of empty glasses are people. People who once knew the joy of community with a people who claim Jesus as Lord. There are also people who have never heard the story that brings life. (that's another post)

Eddie is a life on the "Road to Gaza." Eddie has been very faithful to gather where the people meet to learn about God and he has contributed greatly to many.

My personal joy is his interaction with my children. A hard life which gives back gentleness.

I am honored to know Eddie. He is my friend and my brother in Christ.

btw, if you smoke, Eddie would kindly suggest you stop or you'll be lugging around a 10 pound bottle of oxygen the rest of your life... which really isn't much of a life.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. What a guy. Boone was one of the first guys to date one of my girl students in my youth group several years ago. It was one of those weekend retreats and love was born. It didn't last, which was a good thing... I don't like long distance relationships. But it was in that weekend I came to know of Boone Langston.

Boone has always stood out from his peers. In high school he was very quick to lead, share and serve. He has a great ability to communicate with large groups and is a very, very creative and funny guy. I like that. He performed a skit once that I will never forget. I only wish it was on YOUTUBE.

This year Boone will be heading to Uganda with his wife for a month of missions work. I wish I could say I had something to do with his great choices in life but I can't. It is Boone following the Lord and giving his life for others. (Love God, Love others).

Oh, I almost forgot... Boone said I looked like Bono from a far off distance as I stood in the shadows. Yet another reason to like Boone.

Peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I feel like I get paid to just... live. I work with one other minister named Dale who has helped me keep my focus on keeping my work as not just a job but something more.

I first met Dale briefly before he was off to Albania for 6 weeks. I was new and alone and unsure how we would hit it off. Well, I suppose after nine years of working in the same job says something. Dale is a brilliant man, he is currently working on his doctorate in ministry and holds two masters above his undergrad work. All of this and he still talks to me.

Dale has a lot of passion and has a heart for truth. When something hits him, he'll share it with you whether you like it or not. He has a heart for ministry. He visits the elderly and those who are ill and in the hospital. He always prays for them and their family, a difficult thing to do when it looks as if all is lost. However, Dale reminds us of our true home.

Something that's funny is, his favorite movie is Gladiator. I'm not sure if it's because he wants to swing a sword around, but hey, who wouldn't want to do that? I think it's because the story line has a strong sense of doing right, even if it cost your life.

He is a strong family man and a wonderful example of how to act and sometimes how not to act as a husband and father. Just ask him... he'll tell you.

It is a joy to be on his team.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. Youth dudes, I know a lot of these guys... It's my job, I'm one of them. I first met Kent several years ago and have only gotten to know him over the last year. What's sad is this, Kent is stepping down as the Youth Pastor at his church. I guess it's not sad that he's doing this... God is calling him somewhere else and his faith is allowing him to follow. I admire that. What's sad is Kent has worked, literally, next door to me for the nine years that I've lived here and I've only gotten to know him in the last 9 months. Shame on me. That's how it works. People and relationships are all around us. Some we walk by and never notice. NEVER! I'm thankful to have had this time to know him better.

In about a week, our morning prayer time will come to and end for the summer as each of us grind away with summer activities. Not Kent. He will have his first summer vacation without a youth group. I can't imagine what that will be like. I'm sure it will be a hugh blessing to his wife.

I'm not sure where or what he will be doing next. I doubt he will fall off the face of the earth and so I will be able to continue my friendship with him, only not as fellow youth ministers... at least for now.

Who's my neighbor? What's their name? What's thier story?

This is the challenge of 52 people

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. It is a wonderful outlet for me. It stops the rushing world around me and makes me stand still. Details. To be able to share lives in this forum is a great blessing for me. Old lives and new ones, old friends and new ones.

Landon Michaelson presented a lighting class at our photography association class a few months ago and it was wonderful. I knew there was something different about him. Not only does he tower over the masses in his physical height his smile and joy overflowed. Overflowed... that's something that doesn't come with many. It is a sign of the Spirit. I gathered knowledge from the class, got a business card and went on my way with a promise to connect sometime.

Time.

Time.

Shopping time at Costco, I ran into Landon and his family, again, the smile and I felt the "overflow." I met his wife and two children and recommitied to "hook up" again. In a follow up email, Landon wrote, "Good to see you again. Contact me anytime about anything. Always good to meet up with another photographer, family man, and man of faith!"

I KNEW IT! ANOTHER MAN OF FAITH!

When the Spirit of God lives in lives, it's different. My time in knowing Landon has not been long, however, it is a relationship which will live into eternity. I love that.

I look forward to the many adventures we will have... the rest of our eternity.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I have witnessed 3 in my time as a parent with my kids in community sports. Sandy, however, stands out among the other two. This sport is her life. She loves the game of softball and she loves the kids. She told me once, "I don't care what the score is, I just want them to learn the sport and have fun." Not the words you would hear from a coach who only wants to win and will do anything to make that happen. These are words from someone who wants to give back, continue a legacy in a time that thinks only of the here and now. Giving back builds something. It's tradition. It's character. It's honor.

I'm not sure if we will ever win a game, but Sandy will win hearts. She takes that which is unshaped and forms something better than gold trophies, which are lost over time in brown boxes and garbage dumps. What is formed is a child who rises up and understands the legacy of giving. Young ladies who will, someday, be mothers, teachers, leaders, and small town softball coaches.

A life that gives back will reward generation upon generation; It is greater than gold.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I wanted to profile the driver who would drive us from LAX airport to our hotel at the Disneyland resort. I met for the first time Bob, our driver.

As Bob pulled up to the curb and helped us load our luggage, I could hear a baseball game on the radio. Loading the kids into their car seats, the smell of cigarettes filled the interior of the van with the faint hint air freshener, which poorly masked the odor of tobacco.

I couldn’t wait to know the story of Bob. As we took off from the airport, I pulled out my camera and started taking pictures. I could only imagine what was going on in Bob’s mind as this “idiot” clicked away at, well, nothing. We had started to make our way to the freeway and there was really nothing to see. But I noticed Bob’s eyes in the mirror.

He was a man who looked tired before the day had begun. Gray hair and a peppered grey, tobacco stained, mustache. But, it was his eyes that caught me. What has he seen over his lifetime? He travels everyday on roads with hundreds of people. He is a shuttle driver.

I asked him, “What’s been the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to you while transporting people?” He said, “Not much, really. I had a flat tire once and another van had to pick up the family I was driving.”

Huh? I thought, out of all the hundreds of people, thousand of road miles every year, the most exciting thing was a flat tire? I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed.

I could tell, at this point, Bob was doing his job. Driving people. It was not his place to hold a conversation, it was to drive people from point A to point B. However, I’m not a normal passenger or person as far as it goes.

I jumped to the baseball game and asked if he had been to a Dodgers game, to which he replied, “I don’t really like the LA Dodgers. I’m a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. (This is how I found out he was from Brooklyn) He and his wife had moved from Brooklyn in 1981 to live near his wife’s father. When they arrived, his wife’s father moved to Florida. They stayed. Yet, I get the feeling that his heart never left Brooklyn.

As we arrived to our location, I thanked him, gave him a tip and said, may God bless you on the road. He smiled a bit and with a little laugh said, “yeah.” I get the feeling Bob's not use to passengers talking to him so much. I hope I gave Bob a little side track from the many people who travel with him and never ask his name. Last week I was called home in the middle of the day to attend my childrens home performance of "Pirates Of The Caribbean." I was told to close my eyes and sit down. On the count of three, my eyes opened and all I could do was laugh. Caleb Jack Sparrow.

Caleb. I'll never forget the day you were born. When they said, "it's a boy," I had a overwhelming sense of joy that brought tears to my eyes. I was so proud. I will always charish that moment. You are a strong young man. Your name gives witness to that. Twelve Israel spies went into the promise land, ten were bad and two were good. Joshua and Caleb.

It was Caleb who would speak up against the entire nation and call them to obey God.

You're a leader, you're a hero, you're a Thomas kid and you're a child of God. I am very blessed and that I have so many around me and around the world. Rabindranath Tagore said, "Every baby comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged with man." I LOVE that statement and I would like to think children are the truest sign of hope in what sometimes seems to be a hopeless world.

Little Ariel is the daughter of my good friends Robert and Pearl. Coffee time with Don is one of the best parts of my week. He is one of my accountability team mates and a good friend. He has a wonderful ability to be shaped by the cross. When he prays for rain during a dry season, he carries an umbrella. He leads his family as an honest man, a godly man and it shows. They are a blessing to those around them. They follow his lead and are servants.

Having survived cancer, Don looks at life with a different set of lenses and the world will be a better place because he stops and notices even the little things. He knows his place and he knows his time. He is in a race to live life to the fullest and he wants to take as many people along as he can.

The only thing that really bugs me about him is this... He knows where to find great bird shots. Share the love. ;-)

If I could attach a psalm to this man it would be this one found in Psalm 1

Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. More than could be contained in this forum, I'm sure. As this project matures, I find it more difficult to keep my thoughts to a minimum. "What is the highlight?" "If I could say ONE thing." Thus, the problem, just one thing!

So, if I could share one thing about my mother it would be this, she is a woman of Faith. As a child growing up I remember the many times she sat and read her Bible before us. I'm not sure if it was everyday, but it was many days. It was ever before me both day and night.

I remember the night I made my choice to make Jesus my Savior... I got out of bed, around midnight, to talk to my mom and there she was, reading her Bible.

It is an image that will always live with me. I hope it is an image that will continue in my life and my children and their children.

The Word of God... I have been very ill)

I'm not sure if I have found my "inner-photographer-self" since I don't really have one subject I stick to. I like to shoot life. How do you narrow that down? I'm not sure. However, I have always admired the "photojournalist" and their ability to capture life that tells a story. Don is that man.

Don works for the Wenatchee World news paper as the head supervisor of photography. He sends out a crew and sometimes himself to capture the going ons of this little town.

I first met Don at my daughter’s piano recital... His daughter also plays piano. It's funny, I didn't notice him at first, I noticed his lens... Canon 70-200 2.8 L series lens which was attached to his Pro body EOS-1Ds II. Drool. At that time I clinched my Fuji Pix 5100 point and shoot, which looked like a tricycle next to a formula one race car when stacked next to the canon. I knew then why they were called CANON.

I knew this was someone to learn from.

I ask my daughters piano instructor who he was and she told me he worked for the news paper as a photographer. I MUST MEET THIS MAN. He can teach me. As awkward as a junior high dance, I crossed the "dance" floor to introduce myself. Voice pitched both high and low I managed to say my name followed by, "I take pictures too." STUPID! I managed to somehow work in a request to have him look at my photos to give me some pointers. He agreed and I've yet to take the next step. I guess I feel like a junior high kid not wanting rejection.

I'm an idiot sometimes.

Never-the-less, Don is a strong family man and Christian. He has offered much to the community here in Wenatchee through the eye of his lens.

peace.
Johnathan~

Johnathan M. I first took note of him in the delivery room at the birth of our second child, Miriam. Before Miriam was born we were looking for a pediatrician for Hannah. New to the area, it seemed that we chose the one Dr. that no one in our circle knew and now he stood ready to handle our new little baby.

From the start I could tell he was more than a doctor. He was a father. As his gentle hands worked over this new life, he watched and listened. I stood next to him waiting for his assessment about this little Thomas child not realizing how significant his role, in my family, would be from here on out. He would become our children’s physician.

As the years passed, he would be there for the well child check-ups, fevers, colds and coughs. As we waited in a small room, we knew the “doctor” would soon be in for the exam. “Knock, knock.” Clunking clogs would tap the floor and the aroma of some type of tea would fill the air as Dr. Cook entered the room. Once more, I would find myself standing and waiting to hear from our physician the outcome we should take.

In 2003, Caleb was born and Dr. Cook was there. It was funny to watch him use my son as a… “squirt gun” on the nurses standing by. I think I even heard him laugh with joy as he did this, but I’m not sure. Needless to say, it is one of my fondest memories. I was glad to have him there.

Last year, in March, we had our son Adam. As I entered the room I was looking at many things I had grown familiar with, however, one thing was missing… our children’s physician. There were just a couple of nurses. NURSES?! Where’s our children’s doctor? Their reply, “Insurance doesn’t allow that any more.” What does insurance know about family?

Even though they wouldn’t let him in the operating room, he was there shortly after the birth to welcome Adam into the world. But I have to say it was different. I missed his presence in the operating room.

I’m thankful for this father who is a great pediatrician. It’s nice to not just have a “doctors visit” but friendship. I love to hear of his children’s studies, weddings and all about vacation time. It is positive and encouraging to me as a father.

I can’t imagine the number of children he has helped. I imagine God only knows that. Yet, this gentle healer’s hands have touched the future through the lives of the little ones he has cared for.

What more could anyone ask for?

Peace.
Johno~

Johnathan M. I don't know. It's been within my eight years of living in Wenatchee, but it seems longer. Not in a bad way, but a good way of course.

I guess the first time I met Dan was on a visit to a youth staff at her work place. Dan was her boss. Her words were, "you both are so much alike, it's just that Dan is the 'bizarro johno'." Huh? (If I only knew the true meaning of that statement at the time).

It was then a friendship began. God had placed each of us at a certain place and a certain time. I've learned a lot about myself through Dan and even more about God. I remember golfing one time with Dan, I was left with about a 3 foot putt for par... easy enough. Then Dan, who by the way had not said much until hole number 7, said, "I know Christ died, but tell me how Christ died for ME?" Did I mention I was just about to putt that 3 footer? I looked up at him and said... JERK! I'M ABOUT TO MAKE MY FIRST PAR WITH THIS 3 FOOT PUTT AND YOU WAIT UNTIL NOW TO ASK ME A QUESTION LIKE THAT? UNFAIR AND UNSPORTSMAN-LIKE!... I missed the putt so I tried to answer the question.

It has been a great journey walking with Dan and seeing him ask, listen and respond to books I would suggest and walking through the story of Jesus, God who came to earth. I will never forget him saying, "I'm ready to be baptized." We set up a time went down to the Columbia river and responded to the question asked on the months before on the golf course. Christ died for you so that you might LIVE. (That's the short version) Dan and his wife were both baptized that day and their embrace is not only captured on film, but in my life.

Dan, is a true friend and he is a true servent. He is so... Gentile. It messes with me sometimes but that's ok. He is a family man, a strong husband, a great father. He wears a set of lenses that allows him to see things in a way that many cannot. I love that. It is a gift.

He's creating a legacy, he is growing his family tree in a way that has never been done before. It is solid, it is built on Christ.

-Psalm 1

Every tree needs a trunk... Dan is that trunk.

peace.
johno~

Johnathan M. I know we look at the greats who have led major teams, both professional and college, to record breaking success. However, there are those who coached the teams who who have never made a story in Sports Illustrated or been interviewed by ESPN, but have been forefront leaders in small communities around the world. It is the coach that lives in a small town who is responsible for the young men and women who have boosted the fame of those we read about or see on TV.

Coach Preston it that kind of coach and his success as a coach has left a trail of business men, construction workers, caretakers and a list of others who have learned that there is no "I" in the word "TEAM."

He is a man of heart. He has poured his heart out so much it has now left him with several uncertain moments in the emergency room. Yet, his determination, his heart, presses on.

This is what makes a coach. One who can teach, listen, discipline, hope, win, lose, share, receive, dream and love. He takes seriously this thing called "Family." He is a family man. Not to many people can do that. Not to many people have what it takes to be a family man.

I heard him say once, "I love the song, 'Amazing Grace.' It's amazing how God just opens his blessings on us." It was after a practice on Sunday and the clouds broke and the sun was bright.

God has placed this man in the lives of many. Many would choose to serve themselves... Paul Preston chose to become a coach.

peace
johno~

Johnathan M. Aside of being a master ELK hunter, Greg was the youth minister who taught me how to dream big, do the impossible and teach God to teens.

Greg truly seeks to serve the Lord. It is his life calling. I love how he always gives credit where credit is really due. Whenever you tell him, “good job” he says, “praise God.” Not too many people would say that. Most of us just say, “thanks” and keep the credit for ourselves. Not Greg.

Greg also is great about seeing God in others and letting them and those around them see and hear the story of God working in their lives. He has a wonderful gift of making the presence of God present. In his effort to listen and be used by God, his ministry has covered the globe. Many lives have crossed Greg and each one has several lives that touched them. He’s like a spiritual grandpa with many children and grandchildren and even great-great grandchildren. All I can say is this, if you know me, your life has been touched by Greg Woods… You may not know it, but that’s OK neither does Greg.

Greg shows what it is like when you serve and let God take care of the rest.

Around 10 years ago, Greg stepped out of youth ministry to work in Family ministry. Recent events called him back into the trenches of youth ministry and back he went. He’s a bit out of touch with the current top 20 rock songs, his bones are a bit more frail and now he battles diabetes; however age has not slowed down his heart. In the eternal sense he is just a child and it is in Christ that his weakness is made strong.

Greg and I have shared many adventures together including a trip to Uganda, Africa. God willing we shall take that trip again this year. I am honored to serve as a youth minister with him in the Northwest.

Oh! One last thing. For those of you who have ever made it to my office and have wondered, “how in the world can you find anything?” just know this, Greg taught me that too.

Peace.
Johno~

Johnathan M. It's not that I never looked at people before... It's just that I look at them and wonder what their story is. Sometimes you get to know the story and other times you “judge” a book by its cover. Never the less, I found myself this last weekend in another story of a life from Norway. Pastor Bent is a Lutheran Pastor who I met in Portland at a church retreat. Although I am not Lutheran, our conversation was joined together in that we both are seeking to share Jesus and his story to our community and our culture better than we have been doing.

I was set back as He told me, over lunch that European churches are in massive decline, that most pastors will not meet their parishioners until they are in need of a burial. He further explained that the largest church in Switzerland has on record 7000 members... of which only 8 attend a regular weekly services. EIGHT!

Pastor Bent, is fighting what looks like a losing battle. However, he has a secret weapon... Hope. He traveled all the way to America to attend a “church innovations” seminar along with several other Norwegian Pastors because he has been called to Pastor. He has been called to share a message of reconciliation to an un-reconciled world; that the righteous came for the unrighteous.

Pastor Bent stood with his comrades and sang for us, in his native tongue, a song which translated, “Even if the people are no more, and the mountains crumble, God is still God.” As I listened to these men and women singing, I was taken to a place of hope. It was a small glimpse of heaven. God is God. His name is everywhere, He is working everywhere, His story is everywhere. Men and women I did not know spoke of the same hope that I know and hold close.

I may never see Bent this side of heaven. I know he loves God, he loves the church, he loves his grandchildren that are very close to the age of my own children.

To Pastor Bent, My the Lord bless you and keep you. May he make His face shine down upon you and give you peace.

Johno~

Johnathan M. I started taking photos for the rams almost 3 years ago and I only came to really know Frank last year. Caleb, my son is a big fan of "Frank #1"... One time I took my family to the ice cream store for a treat and guess who walked in? Frank Smith, #1. It was funny to watch my kids look at this "superstar" giggle and timidly walk up to say hi. His response was great. He made the kids feel like they were just as important. before we left for home, Frank #1 Smith, ran out to his truck and grabbed an old football, signed it and gave it to Caleb as a gift. This act put Caleb on cloud 10.

The day I took this photo, once again, Frank #1 Smith, took another step closer to the Caleb Thomas Hall of Fame, by giving Caleb his old football helmet. It almost brings Caleb to the ground when he puts it on, but he loves every bit of it.

It's great to know that guys like Frank exist. Men who are not afraid to be hero’s; men who don't forget to notice the “little” ones who are watching and take time to encourage them.

The number Frank wears on his team jersey is not what makes him #1... However, I feel blessed to have so many now. Bill Pink and I have been true brothers for a long time. The time we spent as a family together in Portland, OR was wonderful. He is and will always be known as Uncle Bill by my kids. It's tough to have him living in Oklahoma and not being able to spend time with him and his family.

I miss the friday night dinners out, the long trips to tower records, going to WWF wrestling matches, (we only went to one), playing the "gotcha" game and watching classic cowboy movies... Nick. Crazy, obnoxious, overboard, loud, radical, out-of-control, gentle, loving and forgiven. Although he's all grown up, he's still much of the above. I’m not sure I would want it any different. Nick lives life to the fullest. Soon he will be a father too and soon he will understand a new season of life that only a father can know. Darren is that kind of man who you want. I've learned a lot from him. I now own many "little man" tools thanks to the encouragement of Darren telling me I can do it. I have little man stuff, because Darren is the MAN. However, it is not his tools that make him the man, though we joke often. It is his heart of a servant. If anyone thinks they can do it... Darren does it. He uses his gifts for so many others. His heart is a childs heart. He plays like a kid... BIG KID. Yet, his thoughts and heart show years of wisdom beyond his age.
